In vitro cell culture models on monolayer surface (2D) have been widely adapted for chemopreventive food compound identification. However, the low correlation between 2D models and in vivo animal studies has always been a concern; this gap is mainly caused by the lack of a three-dimensional (3D) extracellular microenvironment. In 2D models, cell behaviors and functionalities are altered and consequently result in varied responses to external conditions (i.e., antioxidants) and hence lead to low predictability. Novel peptide hydrogel 3D scaffolding technologies for cell culture have been recently reported to physiologically mimic the 3D microenvironment and can serve as an ex vivo model for cell activities, which hopefully will improve the prediction rate. Thus, this seminar will focus on the advances in self-assemble peptide nanomaterials, particularly hydrogels, as novel 3D cell culture tools with potential for ex vivo 3D models for cancer-related research with regard to toxicity and efficacy of functional food compounds.
