Different formulations of interactive nanocomposites (INCs) were produced using wet-chemistry methods to response to the variations of environmental stimuli and self-regulate their nanostructures and chemical properties. These nnomaterials with high surface area or surface to volume ratio and porosity are the dominant factors that lead to enhanced reactivity. It was found that he power density and current density of fuel cells were found to be increased by one fold magnitude while device durability was sustained at a 95 % root mean square current modal value at 3,600 cyclic operations. However, one functional parameter often overlooked is the end of life disposal and potential reactive oxygen species generation and cytotoxicity. These electrocatalyst was fabricated for proton fuel cells and it was determined that 10 out of 48 different formulations of electrocatalyst were found to be biocompatible with lowered cytotoxicity (the half-maximal inhibitory concentration, IC50&lt;20 ppm) when tested on the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Since 2010, our team started scaling-up the synthesis nanotechnologies with decreasing materials and energy consumption. This effort may one day lessen society’s reliance on centralized water treatment systems, which is an important consideration after the Tsunami in Japan. In summary, the conceptual innovation of this research lies in applying molecular mechanics and dynamic techniques to improve energy utilization with mitigated toxicity of nanomaterials. The methodological innovation includes cost-effective and up-scalable wet-chemistry to prepare interactive materials to respond to the environmental changes and data-driven fine-tuning of their nanostructures.
