Proteins in Nature can guide the crystallization of calcium carbonate into fascinating materials such as shining pearl and tough shell. To use the principles of natural biomineralization to lab-grown crystals, intermolecular interaction-driven solution crystallization is developed for polymeric, molecular, and ionic crystals. Tools such as low-dose high resolution TEM, energy filtered TEM, low dose electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, neutron techniques, and impedance spectroscopy were applied to reveal the effect of growth conditions (temperature, polarity, pi-pi interaction, evaporation rate, and composition etc) on the resultant ionic and electronic behavior changes.<sup>1-2</sup> More understandings of local chemical environment upon nucleation and crystal domain development are underway to improve and optimize the process for specific applications in energy and elsewhere.<sup>3</sup>
