CO2 sorption enhanced methane steam reforming (SESMR) is a potential approach to economically provide hydrogen (H2) and to reduce CO2 emission. The key point for this process is to develop kind of proper composite catalyst with high catalytic and adsorptive capacity. Compared with mixing of the sorbents and catalysts, Ni/CaO-Al2O3 catalyst is closer to in situ catalytic sorption and possesses smaller mass transfer resistance. However, with the increase of reaction cycles, the active component in Ni/CaO-Al2O3 catalyst tends to be sintered, resulting in poor catalytic activity. In this work, MgO was employed to modify Ni/CaO-Al2O3 catalyst. Results showed that MgO additives could significantly improve the activity and CO2 adsorption capacity of Ni/CaO-Al2O3 catalyst. After 18 runs of carbonation / regeneration cycle, the Ni/CaO-Al2O3 catalyst with 1% MgO possessed a CO2 sorption capacity of 5.06 mmol/g, while the Ni/CaO-Al2O3 catalyst with no MgO just had a CO2 sorption capacity of 2.97 mmol/g. Catalytic evaluation showed that the MgO promoted Ni/CaO-Al2O3 catalyst possessed a H2 concentration of 98.67% and a CH4 conversion of 95.46%, and H2 concentration exceeded 97% even after 10 cyclic runs. The enhanced catalytic activity was ascribed to the proper interaction between Ni and the support, the smaller Ni particle size (13.2 nm) and higher specific surface area (42.47m2/g).
