Clay-polymer hybrids have attracted attention due to the improvements in mechanical, thermal, optical and physico-chemical properties from the pristine polymers. Among them, such water-soluble polymers as poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), poly(acrylamide) (PAM), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) have been complexed with smectites as the solids and gels for the application to water purification, ion-conductor, self-healing, gas barrier, as well as other advanced materials. Here, the interactions of PVP with smectites will be introduced. PVP were intercalated into the interlayer spaces of smectites from aqueous solutions, and the basal spacing was systematically controlled by the added amounts of PVP. The products can be obtained as films (by casting) and powders. Cationic dyes (such as Rhodamine 6G) were incorporated into smectite-PVP by the cation exchange with the smectites before and after the complexation with PVP. Depending on the expansion of the interlayer space, which was simply controlled by the composition (smectite/PVP ratio), optical and thermal properties were shown to vary. The degradation of Rhodamine 6G and PVP in smectite-PVP by light irradiation as well as by heating was also examined to show useful robustness of smectite-PVP.
