Development of a universal and stable surface coating on the different types of separations membranes, is highly desirable but has proved to be extremely challenging. In this study, new hybrid coatings are constructed to ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes surface, consisting of one surface-adhesive moiety of mussel-inspired dopamine and one dual function glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) moiety via a one-step ring opening reaction. The hydrophilic polyvinylpyrrolidone could be attached to membrane surface by free radical polymerization with GMA, and has a controllable graft concentration. The unique UF and MF membranes excellent high hydrophilicity for treating protein-rich water and efficient oil-water separation. This strategy provides a simple universal coating method to solve the long-standing challenge of hydrophilicity polymers with strong adhesion on polymer membrane surface.
