Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses photodynamic agents, which are activated by light to produce singlet oxygen causing cell death. Porphyrins are known to be suitable photodynamic agents. In this project, a novel porphyrin with a gallium core was synthesized. The procedure included synthesizing H<sub>2</sub>TPPC, the starting porphyrin from pyrrole and 4-formylbenzoic acid.  Gallium(III) was then inserted into to the center of the H<sub>2</sub>TPPC porphyrin core, followed by adding the amine, 3-amino-1,2-propandiol to the porphyrin periphery.   After synthesis, the product was purified by syringe filtration, followed by two separate chromatography columns. The novel water-soluble product was then characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV-Vis, infrared (IR), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Finally, the cytotoxicity of the compound was measured using MTT Assay on A549 non-small cell lung cancer cells with and without exposure to light.
