Benzotriazolate-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as MFU-4, MFU-4l and CFA-1 are built from Kuratowski-type secondary building units (SBUs) featuring divalent metal cations with terminal X-type ligands. We have recently shown that post-synthetic ligand exchange can be used to generate terminal metal hydroxide groups in these MOFs, resulting in materials that are excellent adsorbents for trace CO2 capture. However, our attempts to expand the library of Kuratowski cluster-based MOFs using typical coordination self-assembly strategies have been met with limited success. This presentation will describe our synthetic investigations using polyimide condensation reactions between amine-functionalized Kuratowski clusters and organic dianhydrides as a complementary approach for the synthesis of porous metal-organic polymers. Although amorphous, the resulting materials exhibit N2-accessible porosity and BET surface areas commensurate with analogous MOFs prepared via a typical coordination self-assembly approach. The synthetic methods, polymer characterization, and gas adsorption properties of the new materials will be described.
