Drug discovery research in academia provides outstanding opportunities for basic research, translation, commercialization and training of the next generation of scientists. I will highlight milestones from my own career that showcase traditional and modern medicinal chemistry strategies, synthesis of medicinal agents, advances in organic chemistry, lead optimization and commercialization efforts.
