Theranostic methods combine therapeutic modalities with diagnosis techniques to effectively treat a patient. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a therapeutic modality where a photothermal agent (PTA), when irradiated with a Near Infrared (NIR) laser, produces heat to obliterate cancerous cells. An example of a PTA candidate is the Nickel-bis(dithiolene) complex, (NBu4)2[Ni(dmit)2]. We aim to integrate PTT into high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose and treat cancer. Here, we describe the change in the relaxation of MnCl2, a paramagnetic metal complex used as an MRI contrast agent (MRI CA), caused by a mixture of (NBu4)[Ni(dmit)2] and ZnCl2. Solutions of MnCl2, synthesized (NBu4)2[Ni(dmit)2], and a mixture of (NBu4)[Ni(dmit)2] and ZnCl2 with MnCl2 were prepared at different concentrations, and their relaxation times were measured using a Bruker Minispec (mq 60) bench-top relaxometer. The r1 and r2 of MnCl2 decreased in the presence of the mixture. These results show that when a mixture of (NBu4)[Ni(dmit)2] and Zn complexes are coupled to MnCl2 as the MRI CA, a reduction in its relaxation times occurs. This information needs to be considered to adjust the dose of the theranostic agent administered to patients for the high-resolution MRI analysis.
