Decades-long disposal of per and poly-fluoroalkyl species (PFASs) from industrial processes and commercial products made them persistent organic pollutants, adversely affecting the environment. Widespread use and extreme resistance of PFAS to degradation resulted in the ubiquitous presence of these compounds in the environment, which poses serious risk to human health, wildlife, and the ecosystem. The conventional analytical techniques for the quantitative determination of PFASs in environmental matrices are HPLC and GC-MS <i>etc</i>. Despite their high reliability, these techniques suffered with high purchase and maintenance costs that limit the availability of these methods for routine on-site analyses. To advance analysis and for rapid screening of samples, there is a predominant need to develop a robust cost-effective, sensitive, user-friendly and portable analytical method for the field detection of PFASs. The current research focuses on the rational design of an electrochemical technique for the precise quantification of PFAS at trace levels. The interaction of nanomaterials with the selected PFASs and their incorporation into an electrochemical sensing system will be discussed in detail. The proposed novel detection method has a wide range of applications for onsite, selective, and ultrasensitive detection of PFASs.
