Thio- and selenocyanates are protected groups that could potentially be used directly in place of the more reactive (and smelly!) deprotected thiol and selenol functionalities. We will present the synthesis of a variety of oligothiophenes substituted with thio- and selenocyanato groups. Further, we will show that these groups do, indeed, act as thiol and selenol mimics by characterizing oligothiophene thin films on gold surfaces. We will also present our studies on using protected thiols and selenols in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles.
