Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods allow for the deposition of thin films of a variety of materials. Suitable CVD precursors are compounds that are highly volatile and that decompose at elevated temperatures to produce thin films of the desired composition. Metal complexes of malondiiminates (RNCHCHCHNR) are of interest in this context because the substituents on nitrogen should provide enough steric congestion to prevent dimerization, affording monomeric volatile compounds that may be suitable as precursors for CVD. Presented here is the synthesis of monomeric iron, nickel, and cobalt complexes with various <i>N-</i>substituted malondiiminate ligands, and their structural and spectroscopic details.
