The sugarPAD is a paper microfluidic device that can detect 4 different sugars (lactose, galactose, glucose, fructose) via 4 enzyme-based spot tests. This card can detect sugars at concentrations as low as 5% by mass. The sugarPAD was designed for at-home instruction of undergraduate chemistry courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the small quantities and low toxicities of the reagents embedded in the paper, it is safe to send to students in the mail, and safe for them to operate outside a chemical lab setting. The sugarPAD can be used to detect lactose, galactose, glucose, and fructose in food and beverage products, and can also be used with a cell phone and image analysis program to study enzyme kinetics via colorimetry. The versatility and low cost of the sugarPAD allows for the creation of active learning experiences that students can conduct independently at home.
