Process skills are collaborative and cognitive skills crucial for both academic and professional success. Examples include teamwork, interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and information processing. Unfortunately, many students enter their vocations being unable to demonstrate proficiency in these skills. This is an issue that needs to be addressed in undergraduate contexts to better prepare students for their future careers. In this talk, examples of ways to promote process skills in undergraduate general chemistry discussions will be discussed. Facilitation methods that best promote process skills will be shown by comparing student and TA behaviors using ELIPSS (Enhancing Learning by Improving Process Skills in STEM) rubrics and COPUS (Classroom Observation Protocol in Undergraduate STEM) analyses. Additionally, characteristics of active learning materials designed to help students engage in process skills will be presented.
