Tetraazamacrocycles represent a unique class of coordinating ligands with a variety of uses in fields like catalysis. One notable use is the Mn-catalyzed disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide into water and molecular oxygen. However, these metal complexes are subject to decomposition by reagents employed in these catalytic systems, such as the formation of N-oxides and mu-oxo bridges. Additionally, the homogeneous nature of the catalyst precludes regeneration. Therefore, a new class of metallopolymers were prepared from vinyl-decorated pyridinophane monomers through an ethylene polymerization-type reaction using a Ni-diimine catalyst. In essence, the macrocycles themselves form the backbone of the polymer. The synthetic preparation and characterization of both the monomeric complexes and novel polymer systems will be discussed.
