Diaryliodonium salts are useful reagents for aryl transfer under metal-free and metal catalyzed conditions. The counter anion is often a key variable in development of metal-free reactions and the optimal counter anion is determined from empirical screening. Rational selection of the counter anion relative to solvent or reaction coupling partner is not currently possible. In this study, we are measuring conductivity of diaryliodonium salts with 7 different counter anions in 9 different organic solvents as a way to quantify the association constant between iodonium and the counter anion. We have developed a model based on our data to predict the mole fraction of speciation between solvent separated or contact ion-pairs. We will use this knowledge to correlate speciation with reactivity.
