Liquid-phase reactions with transition metal-based nano-catalysts are critical in the conversion of emerging feedstocks. The presence of reactive solutes, solvents, and spectator species present significant challenges in understanding reactions at solid-liquid interfaces, particularly under conditions involving high temperatures and pressures. Here, we directly studied a series of triphasic hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions, catalyzed by supported transition metal catalyst, at elevated temperatures (120 - 225 °C) and pressures (starting with up to 100 bar H2) using operando magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy (MAS-NMR). The slow initiation of the catalysis could be observed due to catalyst induction. Besides, kinetic information obtained with operando MAS-NMR allows the participation of the solvent during the catalytic activation and further catalytic reactions. Complex reaction networks can be elucidated based on the information-rich, time-resolved spectroscopic studies.
