A series of lanthanide based bowl-shaped molecular compounds have been prepared and have shown to bind adamantly derivatives (a functional group found in new psychoactive substances). The four compounds which are prepared from five steps. The macrocycle was found to undergo conformational changes, leading to the formation of four major isomers cone, partially cone (pacone), and two alternate isomers. Only the cone isomer can coordinate the lanthanide ions at the bottom rim of the macrocycle. In order to enhance the spectroscopic signature, 4,4,4- trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione was used as an antenna to sensitize the lanthanide ion (Ex = 327nm). It was shown that a 1:1 ratio of antenna and Tb[cone] complex formed through displacement of Tb3+ bound nitrate ions, as well as it gives significance rise to the formation of luminescent ternary complex at 495nm, 550nm, 590nm, and 625nm which are the characteristic phosphorescence luminescence indicative of Tb3+ ions. Then 1:1 complex of Tb[cone] and antenna will be utilized to bind adamantyl derivative new psychoactive substance (NPS) drug via hydrophobic interaction between electron rich cavity of macrocycle and adamantly moiety.
