The first example of an Y(II) ion in a crystallographically-characterizable molecular complex was obtained by reduction of Cp′3Y (Cp′ = C5H4SiMe3) with potassium in the presence of 18-crown-6 (18c6) to make [K(18c6)][Cp′3Y]. Subsequently, a more stable Y(II) complex was obtained with 2.2.2-cryptand (crypt) in place of 18c6, namely [K(crypt)][Cp′3Y]. To examine the effects of alkali metals and chelating reagents in generating molecular Y(II) complexes, a range of alkali metal reductants (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) with different organic chelating agents (crypt, 18c6, and dibenzo-18-crown-6) have been tested. The results of these reactions and the decomposition half-lives of the products will be described. Correlation of the half-lives with the alkali metal/chelate bonding constants will be discussed. Oxidations of the [Cp′3Y(II)]1− anion with Hg will also be presented.
