Surface potential measurements of the air/aqueous interface have recently corroborated against a circuit model of the ionizing surface potential. Detailed experiments on inorganic electrolytes show an increase in the surface potential value compared to pure water. While there is continuing debate over the fundamental driving forces behind the ion adsorption/desorption near the aqueous surface, our measurements indicate adsorption-like behavior consistent with the Hofmeister series. By associating adsorption isotherm models to these surface potential measurements, the adsorption free energies for several anions are derived and compared to the literature.
