Annular centrifugal contactor as a promising application of liquid-liquid extraction is based on Taylor-Couette flow. The flow within the annular region also called mixing zone is essential for the mixing efficiency and extraction efficiency. Four different configurations of rotor-fins were presented to improve the flow and mixing in the mixing zone. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) were performed to characterized the flow field and concentration field respectively for every rotor configurations and a smooth rotor as a comparison. In addition, extraction experiments were also performed with every rotor configurations. The results had a good agreement with the PIV and PLIF results. As the axial mixing was weaken, the extraction efficiency was enhanced. The kenics rotor-fin showed the highest mixing efficiency and extraction efficiency.
