The formation of block copolymer self-assembly derived structural nanomaterials is discussed from a combination of block copolymer self-assembly and polymer derived ceramic precursors. Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) have enabled, <i>e.g.</i> the development of nonoxide ceramic coatings and fibers with exceptional thermo-mechanical stability. The talk will focus how the self-assembly based nanostructure control of amorphous macromolecules can be transcribed into high-temperature non-oxide type ceramics for applications as structural materials or high-temperature catalysis supports. The emphasis will be on the development of wet chemical methodologies towards controlled nanostructures resulting in specific function. Work will cover the self-assembly based synthesis of silicon oxynitride ceramics by pyrolysis of blends of commercially available preceramic polysilazane with structure-directing block copolymers up to temperatures of 1000-1500 ° C. This will include the preparation of gyroidal (space group Q230) mesoporous monoliths, both as polycrystalline as well as single-crystal samples. The talk will cover examples of how such high-temperature ceramics in the form of hierarchically structured materials may provide substrates for high-temperature catalytic conversions including the total oxidation (combustion) of methane, a reaction relevant to energy technology and environmental catalysis.
