The American Chemical Society student chapter from the University of Puerto Rico in Aguadilla (ACS SC UPRAg) focuses on the academic, professional, and personal development of its members. Our chapter is distinguished by having members from different branches of science such as biology, environmental sciences, and chemistry. We have had several challenges as a student chapter with the pandemic of COVID-19, these challenges involved communication, learning, physical and social interactions. The strive to beat new challenges in a difficult situation enables us to face them and try new strategies that help us improve. We believe that leadership delivers the capacity our members need to aim for success in our future. As a student chapter, we encourage our members to make a difference by helping others, giving them the opportunity to participate in activities of community service, school visits, Webinars, among others. One of our goals was to impact the little lives, trying to ignite the flame of curiosity through the virtual school visits where we presented videos of experiments carried out in our homes with homemade materials and explained the concepts to the students. As the challenges become greater, it becomes more difficult to be motivated but our love, perseverance, empathy, and desire to serve the community was what drove us to continue going the extra mile. Looking for ways to empower our members we provided them the tools to help them understand and appreciate chemistry. Modules and virtual workshops such as Understanding Organic Chemistry and Stereochemistry have helped our members to expand their knowledge and show them the importance and application that has in our world. Another important goal was to impact elders and homeless people from our community. To reach this goal our members had the idea of producing a video where we expressed our respect, affection and appreciation for elderly. We also prepared bags filled with an assortment of prevention and safety items essential to help combat the contagion and spread of COVID-19 for the homeless. Without a doubt, this year was a challenge to be able to impact lives, but definitively, ACS UPR Aguadilla will continue to serve its community and forge leaders for the future through the power of Chemistry, unity, inclusion and respect.
