Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has evolved over the past 40 years such that the predictive understanding of a variety of materials has become both more common and (at times) a centerpiece of transformative science. This presentation will highlight past advances in resolution enhancement (double rotation, dynamic-angle spinning, multiple-quantum MAS, etc.) coupled with sensitivity enhancement (high magnetic fields, polarization transfer, etc.) that have pushed forward studies in catalysis, glass science, and energy storage. Extensions to current studies of advanced multivalent energy storage materials will also be featured. Throughout, coupling of NMR studies to the most advanced computational capabilities and simulations has proven advantageous, although a number of insights are also gained through “pencil-and-paper” analyses of the mathematics connected to our experiments.
