Global dioxin emission has been increasing and threatening environment and human health under the context of industrialization. We compiled the global status of dioxin emissions across countries among the world and chose China, the major emitter of dioxin and the largest developing country, as an example to demonstrate how to reduce the emission. Moreover, based on analysis toward China’s dioxin emission trend, sources and inventory, we found the Chinese dioxin emissions were stable around 9 kg toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) in recent years, while metal production and heat and power generation were the most important dioxin sources, the reduction of PCDD/Fs is of great significance to China and world. Of all available data, the global dioxin emissions were about 204.38 kg TEQ/year and the countries with high emission densities are mainly concentrated in Africa, Asia and Oceania. Per capita dioxin emissions are generally high in African countries. China's dioxin emissions are among the highest in the world, but its overall emission density is at a moderate level and per capita emissions are at a low level. There is a large space for dioxins reduction in industries such as metal production, waste incineration and disposal. The results indicated that there is at least 30-70% of reduction scope in China based on three scenarios, and this will reduce the world's annual dioxin emissions by 1.3%-3.2%, which have guiding significance for Chinese and global dioxins reduction.
