An advanced electrolyte plays a crucial role in stabilizing the high voltage lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) by forming stable electrode/electrolyte interphases, which sever as kinetic barriers preventing continuous side reactions at the surfaces of the high voltage cathode and the highly reactive Li metal anode. The conventional LiPF6/carbonate-based electrolytes widely used in graphite-based Li ion batteries are no longer suitable for the more stringent high voltage LMBs due to their poor oxidative stability at high voltage and severe reactivity with Li metal. Among the various approaches, localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) significantly improve the battery performances due to their unique solvation structures. In this work, we will give a brief summary of electrolyte design principles for LHCEs as well as the applications of LHCEs in the high voltages LMBs. Taking Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells as the study platform, a series of the LHCEs are systematically investigated, including their physical properties, electrochemical performances in the cells, and underlying mechanisms for the advanced LHCEs by postmortem analyses after cell cycling. This work can guide the further development of electrolytes for high voltage LMBs. The details will be discussed during the presentation.
