Some foundational topics within instrumental analysis, such as signal-to-noise ratio, band broadening, and chromatographic retention, are presented as general concepts. Alternatively, they can be presented as quantities to solve for using mathematical equations. While students can describe these ideas and perform these calculations, they may be left with little intuitive understanding of the effects these concepts have on actual analyses. The laboratory is a natural place for experimental exploration of some of these topics, but this exploration may not be feasible because time or cost restraints. Computer simulations are available that can model processes such as electrochemistry and chromatography, and some can be run on local computers or are freely available to use on the internet. An advantage of these simulations is their interactivity, allowing students to immediately see the impacts of parameter changes on their simulated experimental results. Guided inquiry activities guiding students through these simulations can be incorporated into the instrumental analysis classroom or laboratory in different formats, ultimately helping students to develop deeper understanding of these core concepts. Experiences in the development and implementation of activities using simulations to explore topics in signal processing and chromatography will be discussed, along with lessons learned for further iterations of these activities.
