The present study focuses on increasing the shelf life of packed sweets that contain high sugar syrup (especially Indian delicacies). The sweets are usually packed in cardboard/craft paper made boxes, which consists of BOPP film as a protective layer over it.<br/>Cardboard/craft paper made from recycled paper pulps are taken to which partial hydrophobic fumed silica in the pulp slurry (1.5%) at high RPM (using Cowles blade) is added.  The fumed silica acts as a good reinforcement agent by forming a hydrogen bond with the cellulose of paper pulp thus giving good mechanical strength. The dimethyldichlorosilane present in the silica provides a partial hydrophobicity to the board that creates a barrier for moisture to enter. The wettability of the modified surface is studied by performing the Contact Angle analysis. The shelf life of the sweets is also studied by keeping the sweets in the modified container over a fixed span of time.
