Catalytic methods using Earth-abundant metals (EAM) hold great promise for the synthesis of complex molecules, in general, and the pharmaceutical industry in particular. Key drivers for pursuing EAM catalysis include increased sustainability and lower cost compared to precious metals, as well as the potential to harness novel reactivity. However, a number of challenges must be met in order for EAM catalysis to be broadly applicable to the large-scale synthesis of complex pharmaceutical intermediates. These challenges include the development of air-stable (pre)catalysts and the ability to gain a detailed understanding of the factors affecting catalyst (de)activation and catalytic turnover. This talk will describe our efforts at Bristol Myers Squibb to develop a platform for EAM catalysis by leveraging a combination of internal and external collaborations. The overall strategy and key focus areas will be discussed, and selected applications of EAM catalysis to the BMS portfolio will be highlighted.
