La Parguera is a very popular área in the Southwest of Puerto Rico. It has a wide variety of habitats, including mangrove keys. This is the first study to identify microplastics presence in this widely diverse ecosystem. This project aims to identify and quantify microplastic presence in some of the keys, to help increase local community awareness about pollution. For that, sixteen sediment samples and four water samples were collected from four easyly accessible mangroves wetlands in the Parguera Keys, Puerto Rico. Samples were dried and filtered. Microplastics from sand were extracted using density differences in sodium chloride solutions. Characteristics of microplastics along with abundance were evaluated and compared.
