In the search for more environmentally friendly active materials, the use of polysaccharides as coatings for increased functionality of common substrates is an appealing avenue to explore. Polysaccharides inherent tendency to adsorb into each other is a feasible route as it allows for the inclusion of various functional groups on a given surface. Our project focusses on the pre-modification of chitosan (Ch) with a 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized β-cyclodextrin, and its subsequent adsorption on cellulose nano fibrils (CNF) surface. To assess the nature of the adsorption mechanism, different Ch:TOCD molar ratios (1:2, 1:1, and 3:1) were investigated. Finally, to assess the adsorption efficiency of these polysaccharide composites, an amphipathic toxin categorized as a monitored pollutant (microcystin-LR) was tested and followed by QCM-D on 2D model surfaces and by HPLC in bulk when the coating was used in 3D nanocellulose structures. Results showed that the adsorption was accomplished in similar levels independent of the degree of substitutions. Adsorption was best observed in highly modified chitosan with 20.5 mg/g on model surfaces and 2.36 mg/g when it was used to coat the nanocellulose 3D structures. The successful coating of two different nanocellulose systems and their effective microcystin adsorption, open a wide range of possible applications of this bio-based, low energy input coating in high-end fields such as drug delivery, textile, and water restoration.
