Characterization of semiconductor nanocrystal surfaces from a structural and reactivity standpoint remains a major challenge, despite many advances in spectroscopic methods. Here, transition metal carbonyl fragments (M = Fe, Co) are demonstrated to act as spectroscopic reporter ligands to enable the application of molecular physical inorganic methods toward the surfaces of CdSe, CdS, and CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> nanocrystals. These fragments are sensitive to surface charge, and enable in situ detection of changes to nanocrystal surfaces.
