<br/>Currently warning labels exist on certain drug bottles that caution against exposure to sunlight due to risk of sunburn. The reason for these photophysical changes is still largely not understood despite this warning appearing with high frequency. This knowledge gap has made predicting the photosensitivity side effect for new drugs difficult and is typically discovered during clinical trials. Thus, we propose that by measuring various photophysical properties of ibuprofen, a model can be derived to determine what properties of the drug contribute to the photosensitivity side effect in order to improve our ability to accurately predict the side effect before clinic trials. Through the use of absorption and emission spectroscopy, we hope to determine if photophysical properties such as the quantum yield and the change in dipole moment upon excitation can contribute to the model along with current guidelines to better predict the photosensitivity side effect in ibuprofen. In order to accomplish this, the change in dipole moment will be determined using the solvatochromic shift method.
