While zeotypes have been used as catalysts, relying on their three-dimensional confinement to bring multiple reactants/intermediates together, here we probe a different, nuanced question: can a two-dimensional pocket – which is too shallow to offer the type of 3-D confinement typically associated with a micropore – also act to enhance catalysis on a solid surface? Our results spanning both hydrogenation catalysis as well as selective oxidation catalysis demonstrate this effect in action, as well as its entropy-of-activation origins.
