Dicamba is a post-emergent herbicide that has historically been applied to wheat and cornfields, and in recent years, it has been applied to genetically modified soybean fields. However, dicamba is known to volatilize while being sprayed and drift to neighboring fields, potentially damaging non-genetically modified crops. With the long-term goal of understanding the photodegradation pathways of airborne dicamba, our research group has been developing methods to sample dicamba in the gas phase and to detect and quantify dicamba through the use of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Chlorobenzoic acid has also been examined as a model for dicamba during the method development.
