Binghamton University’s Instructional Chemistry Program and Information Technologies Services Innovations group developed and implemented a web-based fluorimeter simulation to complete the quantitation of riboflavin in cereal remotely. The in-house designed simulator allows students to perform excitation and emission scans of standard and sample solutions, using pre-determined parameters and datasets, to complete an external standard quantitative procedure. Video media of the laboratory procedure was provided for students to observe each step in the procedure, including standard preparation, extraction of riboflavin from cereal, and data collection on the Perkin-Elmer LS-45, and to record observations. Students also met with a teaching assistant virtually to discuss the experiment, the use of the simulator, and the findings, prior to submitting a typical laboratory report. In general, as shown through a student survey, the simulator was received positively, with students commenting that it was very similar to using the instrument in the laboratory, it looked good, and was easy to use. Future developments will include other instrumentation and the capability to create data in real time.
