Ternary alkaline earth metal/Group 4 d0 transition metal chalcogenides with the general formula ABE3 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; B = Zr, Ti, Hf; E = S, Se) constitute an emerging class of semiconductor materials which have drawn attention for their unusual and potentially useful optoelectronic properties, including as photovoltaic absorbers ("lead-free perovskites"). However, experimental progress in realizing efficient photovoltaic devices using these chalcogenide perovskites has been slow, in part due to synthetic challenges, as current approaches rely on very high-temperature synthesis and processing. Synthesis of these materials as colloidal nanocrystals presents an attractive alternative approach which could allow for the preparation of colloidal inks and the study of the size-dependent properties of these semiconductors. We report the development of a wet-chemical approach to the synthesis of colloidal dispersions of one member of this class, BaTiS3, a material whose properties have been recently reported to include record optical anisotropy (linear dichroism and birefringence) in the visible and infrared regions. The synthetic approach and condtions can be used to control the nanocrystal size and shape; the impact of these modifications on the optical properties will be discussed. Efforts to extend these methods to related materials are ongoing.
