Research at a primarily undergraduate institution requires careful selection of a problem, and even more careful selection of approaches to that problem. The research described in this talk serves as one example of how straightforward laboratory techniques and a flexible research agenda open to serendipity has allowed us to discover and develop a powerful and general approach to the molecular recognition of peptides and proteins in aqueous media that is predictiable on the basis of the sequence of amino acids.
