Several porphyrinic ligands have been synthesized that are suitable for use in metal-organic frameworks by virtue of multiple carboxylate groups as well as modified versions without carboxylate groups and their zinc metalloporphyrin counterparts. This series of ligands shows trends in the behavior towards absorption, fluorescence, and lifetime, based on the slight variations of pendant groups at the α methine bridges that can be utilized to design superior porphyrin and porphyrinic MOF-based sensing or photocatalytic systems by providing insight into how structural motifs amended to porphyrins necessary for MOF synthesis affect the spectroscopic and photophysical behavior of those porphyrin ligands.
