The hierarchical editing language for macromolecules (HELM) has become an industry standard for the representation of biological macromolecules; however, a similar adoption of a standardized notation for chemical polymers is lacking. The establishment of custom monomer libraries in the adaptation of HELM lends itself well to application in polymers. Rather than creating an entirely new method for depicting chemical polymers, adapting or expanding the existing HELM framework has many advantages and can help produce robust unified informatics platforms that work for all modalities. This presentation will demonstrate how HELM can already be used to represent polymers then highlight its limitations. By understanding the limitations of this HELM application and the needs of the polymer industry, adaptations can be proposed and a plan to implement be devised.
