The cation-π interaction is broadly represented across all areas of chemistry. Here we will review the fundamental nature of the interaction and will highlight examples in many areas, emphasizing biological systems. In particular, the cation-π interaction plays a prominent role in neuroscience, where it is a key discriminating factor for receptors that are sensitive to nicotine.
