A coupling reaction between benzylboronic esters and alkyl halides was developed. Both alkyl bromides and alkyl iodides were competent substrates with the nucleophilic boronate intermediate generated from the combination of benzylboronic ester and an alkyllithium. Both primary and secondary benzylboronic esters were found to react with primary alkyl halides in this transition metal-free reaction.
