Elm Lake is located in northwest Brown County in South Dakota. Elm Lake is used for both recreation and as one of the sources of water for the city of Aberdeen, South Dakota. The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks has a mercury fish consumption advisory for any walleye that is over 25 inches long for Elm Lake. This prompted the investigation of mercury levels in the lake using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The use of a multimode sample introduction system (MSIS) will be highlighted in the determination of mercury levels as well as expansion of testing to include: arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, and lead.
