Green Chemistry and Sustainability is a combined upper-division undergraduate capstone / graduate level course that integrates communication, critical analysis, and themes of science, technology, and society in the context of green and sustainable chemistry. The course was developed in 2013 as part of our efforts to increase green chemistry education throughout the curriculum at our medium-sized public university and has been taught every other year as an increasingly popular option. Recent enrollment has grown to ~45 students, most of whom are undergraduates in chemistry, along with students in related fields such as environmental science, biochemistry, chemical and environmental engineering, and community health sciences. A course in green chemistry is uniquely situated to incorporate instruction in systems thinking and communication into the chemistry curriculum. This seminar will focus on how systems thinking and communication have been integrated into the course. We are interested in expanding this approach across the curriculum so students can further explore how chemistry can be leveraged to solve societal problems.
