Deoxycholic acid and sodium deoxycholate have been well documented in affecting the fat emulsification process in the human body and solubilization biological membrane components, respectively. In the present study copper (II) deoxycholate (CuDC), magnesium deoxycholate (MgDC) and calcium deoxycholate (MgDC) have been prepared starting from sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) and respective metal salts (CuCl2, MgCl2, and CaCl2). All metal deoxycholates were characterized using spectroscopic and thermal analysis. The solubility of NaDC and CuDC, as well as the critical micelle concentration of NaDC, were also determined experimentally using a surface tensiometer. Mixed micelle solutions of NaDC and CuDC were also studied and analyzed. Gelation studies of metal deoxycholates in various polarity liquids will be presented. Rheology studies of 2 wt % CuDC in glycerol gel show that the storage and viscous moduli are independent of applied angular frequencies confirming the viscoelastic nature.
