Ferrate(VI), an iron (VI) complex anion, is a green emerging treatment agent with a potential to revolutionize wastewater reclamation. Multiple functions of ferrate(VI), including chemical oxidation, disinfection, coagulation, precipitation, and adsorption, enable mitigation of various chemical and microbial contaminants in municipal wastewater at a dose in one reactor. Moreover, little formation of harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs) makes ferrate(VI) a safe treatment agent, advantages over others such as ozone. This presentation will summarize our recent fundamental and applied research on ferrate(VI) for water reuse, including: 1) ferrate(VI) alleviation of phosphorus, particularly persistent dissolved organic phosphorus, in municipal wastewater; 2) activation of ferrate(VI) with ferric ions for enhanced chemical oxidation of trace emerging contaminants; 3) harnessing naturally resultant nanoparticles from ferrate(VI) for capturing wastewater contaminants; and 4) process intensification enabled ferrate(VI) systems for wastewater reclamation.
