Over the years, our laboratory has successfully utilized the bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) platform to support stable thorium and uranium complexes allowing the exploration of uranium in unusual oxidation states as well as reactions uniquely enabled by f-orbitals. Recently, we have been exploring the chemistry of simple thorium and uranium bent metallocene complexes with ammonia borane and several alkyl-substituted amine boranes. Naturally, the observed chemistry is interesting and distinct from that reported for main group, transition metal and lanthanide metal compounds. This paper will discuss a brief history of the influence that Bruce Bursten has had on the research and career of the speaker, followed by discussion of details of this new amine borane chemistry, including mechanistic insights provided from experiment and theoretical calculations.
