A combination of techniques is essential elucidating the mechanisms of the formation, growth, dissolution, and transformation of nanoparticles in reactive media. We employ transmission electron microscopy methods, including cryogenic and in-situ TEM, as well as dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction and scattering, UV-visible spectroscopy, and kinetic modeling to gain fundamental understanding of the formation, growth, dissolution, and phase transformation of nanoparticles. Of particular focus are the iron oxide minerals, which are important in both industrial and geochemical settings. Results from batch reactors and columns tracking rates of reduction and oxidation combined with solid-state characterization will be presented.
