Microwave-assisted synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles provides access to alloyed structures of binary and ternary phases that cannot be obtained using conventional heating methods.  The resulting nanoparticles have solid-solution structures that resist segregation upon heating above 300 °C.  Model heterogeneous catalysis studies of selective hydrogenation, and nitrate/nitrite reduction in potable water, reveal order-or-magnitude increases in reactivity, based on synergistic (ensemble and electronic) effects.
